Australia’s National Lung Cancer Screening Program (NLCSP) is a landmark public health initiative aimed at detecting lung cancer at its earliest and most treatable stages. Launched in July 2025, the program targets individuals at high risk of lung cancer, offering low-dose CT (LDCT) screening every two years. Early detection through screening has been shown to significantly reduce mortality by identifying cancers before symptoms appear.
Who is Eligible?
Entry into the program is based on a risk assessment that considers smoking history and age. To be eligible, individuals must:
- Be aged 50 to 70 years
- Have a history of significant smoking exposure (measured in pack-years)
- Be current or former smokers who quit within the past 10 years
Eligible participants are referred for a low-dose CT chest scan at an accredited imaging provider.
